man checking car issues

There is nothing worse than hopping in your car, ready to start your day, only to learn that it won’t start. It’s a humbling feeling that is often caused by one of a few common problems. Let’s look at five common reasons why your car won’t start:

  1. Battery
Leaving your overhead dome lights or headlights on for extended periods of time may drain your battery.  When this happens, you can use jumper cables and another car to get started again. Most car batteries last between two and four years before needing to be replaced. And yes, we do perform battery replacements.

  2. Starter
If your battery is good, yet the engine will not turn over and you are hearing a clicking noise, then your starter may be the problem. If this is the case, call your auto repair shop as soon as you can to have it replaced.

  3. Gas
Did you overlook the gas light? If you suddenly remembered that you were supposed to get gas the night before, then go ahead and put a few gallons in the tank. You may also need to jump your car when you’ve run the gas to empty. It’s always best to keep your gas tank above a quarter of a tank left. It not only prevents build-up in the engine, but also gives you better gas mileage!

  4. Alternator
Sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose the difference between a dead battery and a dead alternator. If you have jumped the car and still have no luck, then have your auto mechanic diagnose the problem.

  5. Fuses
Sometimes the problem is simple. A blown fuse may be the only thing preventing your car from starting. Fuses are affordable and can be found at any auto repair store—stock up, since they are easy to keep in your glove box.
