Most drivers fill up their tanks every week, but most don’t know that there’s actually a right way to do it. The following tips are not only easy to follow, but a great way to keep your fuel tank clean and your car maintenance in check.
- Keep It Full:
Some people argue that you’ll get more out of your gas tank if you keep it at least halfway full. While this may be true to a minor extent, one of the most important reasons to keep your gas tank full is to preserve the life of the tank. When your tank runs on fumes, it is prone to rust. If rust builds up and clogs the fuel injectors, you could end up with a very expensive repair. It’s a better idea to just keep it above a quarter of a tank.
- Watch Where You Pump:
If you notice a gas truck refilling the tanks while you’re looking for gas, move on. As the truck pours the gas into the tank, it can stir up sediment that can pollute your gas tank. Also, don’t skimp on your gas. Follow your manufacturers suggested level of octane to prolong the life of your car.
- Keep Your Tires in Check:
When your tires are full you get better gas mileage—plain and simple. So the next time you fill up, check your tire pressure. If it’s too low, stop by the air pump on your way out!
These are just a few of the things you can do to maintain your gas tank. Regular maintenance and clean air filters are also extremely important to your car’s health. Remember, when it comes to filling up, it’s better to do it right, then pay for the consequences down the road.
